Students from the University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev” took part in a summer school in European integration which took place from 5th till 11th of May in Brussels. 46 students and professors had the opportunity to visit the European institutions and to observe their work within the framework of the traditional Summer school in European integration of the Bulgarian-Romanian Interuniversity Europe Centre. The summer school is part of the practical studies of the international students from both English taught master programs in BRIE- European studies and public administration, European studies and regional cooperation. This year to them joined also students from the bachelor English taught program in European and global studies, as well as students from the branch of the University of Ruse in Razgrad.
The idea to visit European institutions emerged with the creation of BRIE in 2002 and its realization started in 2005. Since then all generations of students take part in this extraordinary form of teaching in European issues.
During the visit this year the students visited the European parliament and the European Commission in Brussels. In the European parliament they were welcomed by the administrator in the “Visits and seminars” department. She made a presentation on the work of the European parliament and gave many examples of the complex process of decision-making. Later the same day the students visited the newly opened Parlamentarium – a kind of an audio-visual and interactive museum of the European integration. Particularly useful was their involvement in a role play for decision-making during which the students were divided into fractions, defended their points of view in view of the corresponding political families, studied opinions of citizens and participated in voting.
The next day the students visited the European Commission. The reception was provided by the head of the Communication department of the Commission. The session was dedicated to two topics – the place of the European Commission in the institutional triangle of the European Union and secondly – to the topic of the efforts of the General Direction for Employment for overcoming the unemployment among the young people. The participation of leading experts in the Commission was of significant importance and enriched the practical knowledge of the students.
The director of BRIE Dr. Mimi Kornazheva who realized the preliminary communications with the representatives of the institutions, said that the summer school have added value to the theoretical preparation of the students and expressed her satisfaction that this extracurricular academic activity continues. “We put efforts almost one academic year in order to provide the summer school and for the last 8 years we turned it into a brand of BRIE”, said she.
Assist. Dr. Krassimir Koev, strategic development coordinator in BRIE, added that the summer school helps the students to develop their most important competence and to learn to overcome borders. As the trip takes place by bus, the students witness the existing differences at crossing the European borders. Unfortunately the Eastern borders are not part of the Schengen zone and they still symbolize our slow self-identification as European citizens.
